Halfords dominate in this market and with the exception of a small range of generic items such as engine oil, you don't have a lot of choice if you want a part specific to your car. It is either a main dealer, Halfords, or the ever diminishing number of smaller independents. If you check out the Internet though, you can quickly see how much profit the conventional shops are making. Internet competition is a lot more aggressive and prices are often half the price, sometimes less. Unless it is an emergency and you must have the part today, checking out the Internet is always worthwhile, and you can usually get next day delivery in any case. If a local business can match the price and quality then we're happy to list them.
Internet and not local but I purchased a couple of long life Osram H7 bulbs plus a couple of LED sidelight bulbs for £15 delivered. The Halford standard H7 bulb price is a tenner and last no time at all and the standard H7 from these guys is under £4. Delivery was supposed to be 2 to 4 days but the package arrived next day in the post. Great service and great prices. Recommended.

I wouldn't normally include a big chain like Halfords but it is worth doing so because of the truly excellent and attentive service from their car audio fitting chap who went out of his way to be helpful. Some excellent bargains - half price car stereo - but some of the accessories are extortionately priced.
Not a local business but they deliver better car batteries at substantially less cost than Halfords or the RAC to your door within 24 hours. Lead Calcium battery: Halfords - £87, Performance Batteries - £50 including free next day delivery.
Again, not local, but excellent prices and delivered to the door very quickly. Much, much cheaper than Halfords and decent products. Cheapest set for a Focus (2 x front + rear) is £24 from Halfords. From these guys, £11.75 plus £2.45 for P&P. It is worth getting a set in advance.

But you can get just as good a deal by going direct. I was first impressed by how they would not sell me tyres to replace ones that still had good mileage on them and replaced a faulty valve without charge. 10,000 miles later and they have just been done. Every visit so far has seen proper service above and beyond. One complaint - they won't do quotes by email and if you don't have time to ring during the day that's no good. They lost some brake work that way that went to Mr Clutch.
