Nurseries with their green fingered experts usually have better quality plants than the big garden centres where you sometimes wonder about the knowledge of the staff.

I spend a fortune here each Spring and Summer and it's pretty good value and quality, though my cucumber plugs died this year - grow from seed under a cheap propagator, much more reliable. The staff are knowledgeable and patient. Recommend.

Local family-run firm. The website doesn't really help you compare prices in this very competitive market, which is a shame because from the deals advertised at the showroom they are well worth asking for a quote. There's some impressive testimonials on the site and no sign of any complaints on the Internet. Freephone 0800 3897319. The showroom is on Tonge Moor Road but the website doesn't narrow it down. For those trying to find the showroom with sat nav, it is 560 Tonge Moor Rd, Bolton, BL2 3BJ and is next to the Shell Garage. The local number is 01204 592530 - if ringing from a mobile the 0800 number probably won't be within your inclusive minutes. Sorry guys, you badly need to rethink your website, make it easy for people to find or contact you. And tell us the offers in the window. But hey, they do seem to have good deals so give them a try, they are window installers not website designers.

I've had a lot of work done in the past by Mo and my house is full of pictures framed by him and one of his mirrors has pride of place over the fireplace. The guy is a craftsman and nothing is too much trouble. Highly competitive too. Easy parking outside.

Another locally owned windows and conservatories firm and this time they know how to use the Internet! Usually have a range of offers and an Internet coupon. If you look around the Internet there are a lot of customer complaints about double glazing companies but I looked high and low for negative comment about these guys (since I will need some replacement windows soon and St Helens Glass, who I used once before seem to be defunct) and couldn't find a single one. When the time is right I'll be asking them for a quote.
